Abstract

To evaluate the effectiveness of Interpersonal and Social Rhythm Therapy (IPSRT) on perceived competence and social desirability among individuals with bipolar disorder. A randomized controlled trial was conducted with 30 participants diagnosed with bipolar disorder, recruited from Tehran. Participants were randomly assigned to the IPSRT intervention group (n = 15) or a control group (n = 15). The intervention group received ten 60-minute IPSRT sessions over three months, while the control group received no intervention. Assessments were conducted at baseline, post-intervention, and three-month follow-up. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) with repeated measurements and the Bonferroni post-hoc test, utilizing SPSS-27. The IPSRT intervention group showed significant improvements in perceived competence and social desirability compared to the control group. At baseline, the mean perceived competence scores were 42.57 (SD = 5.23) for the intervention group and 41.92 (SD = 5.10) for the control group. Post-intervention, these scores increased to 47.86 (SD = 4.78) and 42.03 (SD = 5.34), respectively. At follow-up, the scores were 46.42 (SD = 5.12) for the intervention group and 41.85 (SD = 5.20) for the control group. Social desirability scores also improved significantly in the intervention group from 33.40 (SD = 4.12) at baseline to 37.92 (SD = 4.35) post-intervention and 36.65 (SD = 4.02) at follow-up, while the control group scores remained relatively stable. IPSRT significantly enhances perceived competence and social desirability in individuals with bipolar disorder, with sustained benefits observed at the three-month follow-up. These findings support the integration of IPSRT into clinical practice as a valuable intervention for improving psychological and social outcomes in this population.
